Skin Routine Du Jour 1.18.10

The long awaited skin post. I always get emails asking about my skin and how I keep it so clear. Let me tell you it used to be a genetic blessing, I have good skin. Then all of a sudden BAM! Read below to find out exactly what and how I use my favorite products!

As you know for a while I was having an unusual battle...with my skin. It was unusual because up until last year I have never had a problem. I coasted through high school and college without so much as a pimple. Then all of a sudden, or so I thought i was having these weird bumps and pimples appearing one after another. It seemed no matter what I did I couldn't figure it out.

One day I just quit cold turkey everything I was using and went back to my tried and true basics including my trustworthy makeup and I figured out what the problem was.

First thing is first all of these product I am going to mention I have been using for YEARS and recently ditched to try out all these fun new things. I am not doing that anymore. I am not trying out new face make up anymore. I know what works for me, my skin is now finally very clear and I am so happy finally with my skin. Also what works for me, may not work for you! Skin varies SO much with people.

#1 Cleanser: I either use Cetaphil Cleanser or Bliss Clog Dissolving Milk. Cetaphil is great, very gentle and easy on your skin, very soothing and creamy, will not dry you out or clear anything up. It is very mild. I really like Bliss's Clog Dissolving Milk, it too is very creamy. It smells fantastic and is easy on the skin. It also will never clog your skin.

#2 Exfoliator: Lush's Ocean Salt or MAC's Volcanic Ash Exfoliator. Both are harsher exfoliators, which I love. I love the feeling of scrubbies. I use either one 2 times a week. I love MAC's but I equally like Lush's and Lush is a permanent product so I am keen on recommending that instead. It smells great, like a Daiquiri or something. It is all natural too which I really love. A tip on using this is that you need to stir it when you first get it, because the rock salt settles and separates. I love how smooth and clean my skin is after this one!
#3 Tone: DDF Glycolic Toner. I wrote a review on this already. I love this! This is surely keeping my skin smooth and clear!

#4 Moisturizer: Morning: I use Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, very gentle and non- comedigenic (meaning will not cause pimples) Evening: Dr. Haschuska Rose Cream.

#5 Makeup: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, I personally do not use the Oil- Free one, I have dry skin and my skin likes the oil in this. I LOVE THIS product, I have been using this since high school and forever has done me good. I never break out from this and it gives me plenty of coverage. Its light and spreads easily. It just evens my skin tone and the Nude color matches perfectly in the winter and Sand in the Summer. I am a huge fan of Laura Mercier's products.
#6 Night time Treatment: MD Skin Care Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel Pads. I use these 3 times a week at night. I got my first facial in 9th grade. My skin therapist recommended these then and every since I have used these over and over. This product by far is truly a scientific miracle for me. This clears, clarifies and smooths the texture of my skin. I will do an in depth review of this later because i can not sing enough praises about this product.
Some further notes:
  • Alone I think going back to the LM tinted moisturizer had benefited my skin. I stopped trying out all different things!
  • A huge thing I stopped using MAC's Cleanse off oil, I noticed as soon as I stopped using this Oil my skin stopped getting clogged up. Too bad because I loved the ease that this provided me in removing my make up and the smell. Oh well...

Remember this is what works for me! Everyone's skin is different and has unique needs!
What are you using and loving? As always love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I'm also using Cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer. For an added moisture boost, I've been loving serums by Elizabeth Grant (just reviewed). My under eye area was really dry (red flaky) so the EG serum helped tremendously.

My skin is dehydrated in the winter so these products are what is working for me now.

  2. Great post! Good to know about the Lush exfoliator. The MAC VA has been my favorite too, so it's nice to know there is a comparable product available. Also, great tip on the Alpha Beta Face Peel Pads. I may have to look into these!! Thanks :)

  4. Now I have some problems with my skin so I am visiting a dermatologist because I think it's the best way to deal with skin problems. I've been visiting this dermatologist for almost 10 years so I completely trust her.

  10. Again, I enjoyed reading this post. About a month back (you know when Mother Nature visits - so corny I know), I broke out on my chin and nothing I could do was helping it. Until I pared right back down on the no of products I was using - and my skin has thanked me for it.
I think because I am moisturising well too in this v cold climate (as I used to only put one layer of moisturiser on due to combo skin) but I am making sure that I am cleansing, toning and importantly exfoliating. And moisturising very well, almost massaging it into my face. Started using Eucerin Hyaluronic night and day cream. The night one I believe has helped calm my face.

    Thanks for the post!

  13. I think I need to try the TM you are using, the oil free version is not as easy to use. However, I hope I dont get shade issues. I also love ocean salt!! X

  14. Muhsine- Yeah, I am not a huge fan of the oil free, a little bit hard to spread. I am a fan of the Oil because it blends perfectly and seamlessly right into your skin! x

  15. I really like the night cream from Eucerin, it reminds me so much of the Lancome moisturisers my mum used to use when I was a kid. It's rich like that - but doesn't clog at all. I'm going to do a review of it soon.

But I do like it more than the day cream...it seems to make my skin a bitmore supple.

  17. My skin totally changed after having a baby and using NARS cleansing oil - changed in a very bad way! I started to break out with really bad and deep pimples. But for some reason I still used the cleansing oil and blamed it on using a variety of foundations. So once I stopped using the oil, I noticed that my skin stopped breaking out, not completely though unfortunately, and now I have serveral blemish imperfections. So now I'm relying on heavy foundation to make me feel somewhat better about my face. I have always had a battle with my skin - was born with eczema and my biggest fear is my daughter inheriting my awful skin. So far she's good but then again she's only 18 months old. I have tried the MD 2step pads as a freebie - yes, it is actually one of the BEST things I ever got for free. I used this before my pregnancy and my skin was good then, albeit for a few marks, and people commented how much I glowed from using it. Well i'm hoping (praying) that it will work for me this time around!

As for my NARS oil - I took it back to Nordstrom, sadly.
