Cult Item Du Jour: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream

I am sure you have all read about and heard about this product. This is the Eight Hour Cream by Elizabeth Arden, touted as the Make Up Artists best friend and carried around in every bag. This is the pot version, I also have the rube version somewhere. I got this at a duty free shop in Paris' Charles De Gaulle I think about 1 year ago.

Anyway, I am not as enthused by this product as everyone else. I have read that a lot of models and celebrities use this on their faces... HUH? This product is not a cream, do not let the name fool you, it is a balm type salve? I am way too scared to use this on my face. However, I LOVE it as a lip balm and love it on the ends of my hair to help with split ends. I also use it on dry skin on my body, it is great for that. I keep it by my bedside and put it on my lips every night, it is very very moisturizing.

The smell is sort of grandma-y, I can quite put my finger on it, maybe roses? The consistency reminds me of a thicker stickier Vaseline.

I guess I was just hoping it would be the end all to my HG moisturizer search. Ah well..the search continues.

Retro Packaging..

Anyone else have this? Love it? Hate it?

  1. I use this on my lips but the smell makes me feel a little queasy. I can certainly live without it! The thought of slapping this on my face fills me with dread, I would look like an oil slick, I still can't understand how people can get away with putting it on their faces and it not breaking them out?

  2. I've never bought this, but i got a free sample once. I tried to use it on my lips but i hated the smell so much i threw it out. I also didn't like the feeling at all, for me it was too thick. Maybe it does have miraculous qualities but i can't cope with it long enough to find out!

  7. i admit, i only bought it because i heard it was a cult favorite and i'm a beauty sheep, so i follow the masses. it disappointed me. it's good for cuticles and dry skin during the winter, but i don't think it's anything out of the ordinary. and yes, it has an odd scent to it, just like you mentioned .. kind of like a faded floral, like potpourri that you set out in the guest bathroom? am i making sense? and i can't imagine putting this stuff on my face - AND i'm on accutane which sucks the moisture right out of me, so that's saying a lot!! i love your blog, your posts are always great!

  8. I have the exact same pot, got it for xmas last year :) They have just brought out a 'new' retro style pot too. Anyway, at first I HATED the smell - it smells like engine oil. I'm the same as you, I could NOT use this as a moisturiser and I have no idea how people use it as one - its WAY too heavy and greasy, no idea how make up artists use it to add a 'glow' to the skin. BUT... its my little pot of wondows... dry cuticles, spots, minor cuts and grazes, dry lips, dry ankles, and my most fav... have you ever cut your nails too short and underneath the nail becomes so sore? its my absolute fav for soothing that & getting rid of the pain! i wouldn't be without it x

  9. I use it for dry patches on my body and rarely on my face. But I just can't put it on my lips since I hate the smell of it so much. It's like medicine mixed with a strong herbal scent, I find it unbearable to have anywhere near my nose :-)

  13. I don't know where you guys get "floral" or "roses" in the smell.
It does smell more like engine oil with a touch of lavender or tea tree.
    Disgusting.
It's distracting and unpleasant to me, but I'll use it at night on me feet since I just bought the hand cream, face cream and lip balm set.
Won't repurchase. You can bet that.
